Ahhhh!, signs of relief that summer is finally here bringing the school year to an end. Safety is my main concern during summer activities. The better prepared we are the more fun activities we can do. In order for me to rest easy, I have drafted several safety tips and practices that has helped our family stay safe while at the beach or out and about.
Summer Safety Tips: Must-Know Summer Safety Practices
Must-Know Summer Safety Practices:
- Sun Exposure – extended time in the sun for us brings a bit more preparation. I make sure to apply sunblock everywhere and use 50 to 100 spf sunblock at least twice a day. Apply once before heading outdoors and reply after a quick meal or sooner if the kids are in the water. Also, the kids wear shirts, shorts, swimming goggles and beach shoes containing UV protection to prevent sun burns. For additional precautions, we try to plan our outside activities before 11:00 AM and after 3:00 PM and staying away from the heat at peek times of the day.
- Water Safety Practices – My kids have had swimming lessons, and although they are not expert swimmer, they have enough confidence to swim by themselves. To keep them save in the water, I usually stay close to them, usually at arms length. My focus is 100% toward them while inside the water, therefore, all distracting items are kept away from us. I verbally call out posted sings and bring awareness of their immediate surrounding areas. A no splash tolerance rule is enforced by me, a quick time if they splash and then back into the water.
- Survival Kit – As a parent, worrying for my kids safety is my number one priority, so for me it is important to always keep a survival kit at hand. Some items may sound weird, trust me, you will use them if the occasion raises. I have assembled all items inside a water proof plastic container fitted into a standard book bag. Before heading out, I review my checklist of our survival kit items, which includes the following:
- Water
- Sewing kit
- Medications
- An extensive comprehensive First Aid Kit with manual
- Back up cell phone battery
- Sun block
- Hats/Sun glasses
- Insect/mosquito repellent
- Tweezers/clippers/scissors/pocket knife
- Lighter
- Flashlights
- Duct/medical tape
- Dental flaw
- Rain suites
- and lastly, Cash.
Using these simple summer safety practices, sun exposure, water safety and survival kit has helped our family tremendously and effectively staying safe & healthy.
